"what's your goal in life?"
asked the banker.
"hmm... what's yours?" replied the garbage disposal man.
"first, i'm gonna earn a lot of money, then i'm going to open my own restaurant."
"i see... now that i think about it... i don't think i have a goal yet."
"hah! you can't be serious! you HAVE to have a goal. take me for example. i took this job coz it pays good. do i like this job? no. but who cares? its easy and all i have to do is mosey along for about 10 years before i can quit and do what i really want. the bottom line is: without a goal, you're not going anywhere."
"hmm.. you have a point. well, i don't have a goal. but i do know that the path that i'm on right now will lead me to my goal."
"but you don't even know what it is!"
"that's true. but its because i don't know, that i can better appreciate the present. that i MUST make my present better. after all, my present is connected to my future, and its there were i'll eventually find my goal, no matter what it may be." You have your sights set so far ahead you don't even see what's directly in front of you, and you're squandering it."

your present is affected by your past.
because if you think about it, your past was once your present and what you did affected your future, which is currently your present.
therefore what you do now will directly or indirectly affect your future.
appreciating your present doesn't mean not having a goal.
quite the contrary, it means you DO have a goal, but you allow yourself the flexibility of non definition, thereby not limiting future possibilities and not allowing yourself to be pigeon-holed by the description of your 'capabilities'.
anything is possible.
and nothing is regrettable.
or at least, i think so.
